Accessing and Transferring your Canvas ePortfolio

Access

You will be able to sign in to Canvas to view, edit, and share your ePortfolio for approximately one year after graduation.

Before the end of that year, you can download and transfer the contents of your ePortfolio. If you are using your UW Google Drive to store artifact documents, transfer these to your personal Google Drive as well.

Download

Download the contents of your ePortfolio from your UW Canvas profile.

The zip file contains all of your artifact files (images, PDFs, videos, etc) as well as HTML files for each of your portfolio pages. These HTML files open in a web browser. You’ll notice that the formatting of these portfolio pages looks different than it did on Canvas. This is because the code that determines the styling (CSS) is separate from the HTML code and isn’t included in the zip file download. Unfortunately, the downloaded files aren’t usable on their own. However, you have a few options for recreating your portfolio on other websites, which will be described below.

Transfer

Recreate in Personal Canvas Account

  1. Create a free “Canvas for teachers” account: https://www.instructure.com/canvas/try-canvas

  2. Recreate the structure (i.e. sections, pages) of your UW Canvas ePortfolio in your personal Canvas account’s ePortfolio area.

  3. Copy and paste content.
    1. If you copy and paste content directly from your UW Canvas ePortfolio while you still have access to it, you can use the same combination of Rich Text Content boxes and HTML Content boxes. This will retain the style used to format the NAEYC standards and the artifact headers.

    2. If you copy and paste content from the HTML files in the download zip file, you can paste the text into Rich Text Content boxes only and use the text formatting available in the rich content editor (bolding, header styles) to format the NAEYC standards and artifact headers.

      1. If you are using only Rich Text Content boxes, you can still embed artifacts hosted on Google Drive using the Insert Media button (see below).

Recreate on a Website Builder Tool (Weebly, Wix, Squarespace, etc)

  1. Choose a website builder (note that some tools are free, while others will charge a small monthly fee for hosting your pages and for a personalized domain).
  2. Copy, paste, and format content from the download HTML pages into the text boxes provided by the website builder toolkit.

  3. Upload your artifacts and use embed codes or links to show your excellent work!
